My husband and I took our kids into an outpatient psychiatric hospital to get some treatment for their anxiety. It was a long drive, but we made it. I’m not sure if it was worth the effort, but I think we did good. Our kids were taken care of in the hospital, and we were given a voucher for the day center we were staying at.
After the visit, my husband and I made the decision that our children would no longer go to the hospital for outpatient care. They can stay there for behavioral issues, but they can’t be put there for mental illness.
We’re grateful that we were able to make the best decision for our kids. I wish there was a way to tell the mental health providers we worked with that we felt it was the right thing to do.
No help meant no more anxiety
We went to the hospital to get help for our daughter, who was having panic attacks. They diagnosed her with anxiety and gave her medication. She now has a good relationship with one of the psychiatrists, and she’s feeling much better. They also provided her with a mental health booklet that she can use to talk to her doctor about her symptoms.
She was not allowed to use that booklet with her doctors, though. She had to bring it with her to the appointment. She had to give that booklet to her doctor before they could discuss it. I’m glad we were able to make the choice to get help for our daughter.
It’s not always the case that you can get help

I wish the hospital had been more understanding

If you’re struggling with anxiety or panic attacks, there are many different kinds of therapy. The kind of therapy that worked for me is cognitive behavioral therapy.
I wish there was a better way to help people who have anxiety
One of the most important ways to help people who have anxiety is to understand why they feel anxious. The truth is, most people have anxiety. It’s normal to feel anxious some of the time, but when it’s uncontrollable and interferes with your day-to-day, it’s time to see someone.
If you’re having an anxiety attack, the last thing a mental health professional should do is make you take medication, or send you to the hospital. It’s important for them to understand why you’re anxious. If they don’t understand, it’s going to be very difficult for them to help you.
I wish there was a way to get support for people who have anxiety
When I was having panic attacks, I used to go to the hospital and get a prescription for a benzodiazepine. It made me feel a lot better. I was able to cope with my anxiety, and I’d give myself a prescription for it.
